Things to Do on Dauphin Island for Memorial Day

If you’re planning a getaway to Dauphin Island this Memorial Day Weekend, you’ll want a breakdown of the best attractions, events, and restaurants. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your vacation!

Things to Do

No matter the time of year, Dauphin Island offers plenty of adventure. Those who love the sand and sea will appreciate Dauphin Island Public Beach, which showcases one of the island’s most beautiful landscapes. It is also the only pet-friendly beach in the area. In addition to the beach, visitors can explore trails, parks, and historical exhibits. If you want to spend time on the water, also consider a private boat tour or fishing charter

Dauphin Island is well-known for its incredible biodiversity. The entire family will love the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Estuarium, which is home to more than 100 forms of aquatic life. The facility focuses on the Mobile Bay Estuary, which is considered the fourth largest estuary system in the United States. Educational seminars and organized tours provide opportunities for visitors to learn more about the area and are free to the public.

The Audubon Bird Sanctuary is among the top four birding destinations in the United States. Each year, thousands of birds migrate to and from Central and South America and pass through Dauphin Island, stopping to rest at the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary plays a crucial role in protecting many of these migrating species. Of the 445 total species found in Alabama, Dauphin Island has seen over 95% of them at one point or another. During harsh weather conditions, bird watchers may be lucky enough to witness a phenomenon known as “fallout,” when all the trees fill with hundreds – even thousands – of birds seeking shelter from harsh weather conditions.

Other significant sites of interest include Fort Gaines, Shell Mound Park, Dauphin Island Heritage & Arts Council Museum. There are also golf clubs and local rental shops with kayaks, bicycles, and other equipment available for rent.
